- Blood-thinning medicine, such as heparin.
- Low levels of blood clotting factors.
- A change in the activity of any of the clotting factors.
- The absence of any of the clotting factors.
- Other substances, called inhibitors, that affect the clotting factors.
What factors affect PT and PTT?
PT and PTT are elevated with severe disease. In mild liver disease, only the PT will be elevated. With more severe disease, both the PT and PTT will be elevated due to decreased synthesis of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors which include factor II, factor VII, factor IX, and factor X.
What factors are measured by aPTT?
The aPTT evaluates factors I (fibrinogen), II (prothrombin), V, VIII, IX, X, XI and XII. (A retrospective study by Bachler et al indicated that in critically ill patients, a factor XII level of 42.5% or less leads to spontaneous prolongation of aPTT.)
What causes elevated PT and PTT?
Common causes of prolonged PT and/or APTT are the use of oral anticoagulants or heparin, vitamin K deficiency and liver disease. Other causes include coagulation factor deficiencies, coagulation factor inhibitors and diffuse intravascular coagulation.
Does aspirin effect PTT?

- Artefact (incorrect amount of blood in the tube)
