The satellite tags are carefully attached to the dorsal fins of sharks with the utmost consideration to shark health and safety. This attachment doesn’t hurt the shark are designed to eventually fall off the fin.

How long has ocearch been around?
Since 2007, Fischer’s crew has undertaken 17 missions to tag and release great whites around the globe. He believes the Atlantic population is the wildest, most untouched in the world. In their 2012 expedition to Cape Cod, the Ocearch shark tracker crew hooked just two sharks.
How long do trackers stay on sharks?
After being on the shark for about 24 hours, the strap will fall off. The monitor, attached to a small float, will surface and begin to transmit a radio signal that can be detected from about ten miles away.

OCEARCH debuts a new TV show on NatGeo called Shark Men that documents its expeditions. OCEARCH launches two expeditions in the Sea of Cortez, and one in the Revillagigedo Islands.
What do students learn in OCEARCH?
They learn the components of a map – title, compass, grid, scale and key. Curriculum 6-8 takes students through the entire OCEARCH tagging process including catching a shark, the research projects performed while the shark is on the lift, and how the shark is tracked using the OCEARCH Tracker.
